LA Arts in the Age of Corona - CBMArts Online Conversation Series - Betty Avila

Betty Avila, Executive Director of Self-Help Graphics & Art (SHG), will join for the Tuesday May 26th conversation.



Betty Avila is a native of Los Angeles and raised in Cypress Park. Her work has centered on the intersection of the arts and social justice, with particular focus on community building, public space, and youth empowerment. She has held positions with the Getty Research Institute, The Music Center and the Levitt Pavilion MacArthur Park. She sits on the boards of the Center for Cultural Innovation and Arts for LA, and is a founding board member of People for Mobility Justice (formerly Multicultural Communities for Mobility), an organization that supports low-income communities of color that bike, walk and use public transit in Los Angeles County.  Betty sat on the inaugural Advisory Committee for Los Angeles County's Cultural Equity and Inclusion Initiative as an appointee of Supervisor Hilda Solis that resulted in the recommendation of cultural policy and was unanimously approved by the County Board of Supervisors. In 2017, Betty was named one of C-Suite Quarterly Magazine’s NextGen 10 in Philanthropy, Arts and Culture and an Impact-Maker to Watch by City Impact Labs. She received her B.A. in Literature at Pitzer College, has an M.A. in Arts Management from Claremont Graduate University, and is a 2008 Fulbright Fellow to Korea.

Self Help Graphics & Art fosters the creation and advancement of new art works by Chicana/o and Latinx artists through experimental and innovative printmaking techniques and other visual art forms. We are an organization rooted in community; and since 1973, have been at the intersection of arts and social justice, providing a home that fosters the creativity and development of local artists. We establish international collaborations and partnerships nation-wide and create world-wide cultural exchanges.


"LA Arts in the Age of Corona” is a twice-weekly conversation, hosted by CBMArts at CGU, with arts leaders and artists about how the current coronavirus pandemic is changing the way we work and engage with arts, culture, politics, and each other. Our aim is to bring out the stories that matter, but also to imagine how we can make LA arts and culture stronger, more resilient, and more dynamic, as we adapt to situations on the ground, in the air, and on the horizon
